AI-Powered Histology: Enhancing Mutation Detection for Early Diagnosis

Accurate genetic mutation detection is critical in diagnosing and treating diseases but in many rural and underserved clinics, access to advanced pathology tools is limited especially in rural and underserved areas. This creates delays, misdiagnoses, and barriers to timely care.

To solve this, I co-created this system to bring advanced medical technology to underserved and rural clinics around the world. The system uses deep learning, specifically YOLOv8, an object detection model, trained on a custom dataset of histological (tissue) images. It analyzes tissue slides to spot subtle patterns that may indicate genetic mutations linked to diseases. To boost accuracy, the model combines YOLOv8 with a hybrid approach that uses SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Measure) to find the closest visual matches in its dataset, and KNN (K-Nearest Neighbors) to classify the results.

Our Results:

This hybrid pipeline makes the tool about 60% faster and more accurate than traditional pathology methods. It has already been deployed in hospitals and universities across two continents, where it has supported the diagnosis of over 250 patients. Physicians have used the tool especially in clinics where diagnostic equipment is limited.

Our goal is to make precision diagnostics more affordable and scalable, so that no patient is left behind due to geography or lack of resources.
